  DVD format compatibility

As you may know it, not all DVD recorders are compatible with each other.  And some of them have compatibility issues with your home DVD player.  The next table compares DVD formats from the compatibility viewpoint and summarizes some other features.

  • High compatibility with older DVD-ROM drives and players.
  • Not rewriteable (like CD-R).

  • Rewritable;
  • Compatible with many current DVD drives and players.
  • Often incompatible with older drives and players.
DVD+R 4.7GB 1
  • Has potential for greater compatibility with older drives and players than +RW.
  • Cheaper discs than rewritable discs.
  • Not rewriteable (like CD-R);
  • Has compatibility issues;
DVD+RW 4.7GB 1000
  • Rewritable; 
  • Compatible with most current DVD drives and players.
  • Fast; 
  • Largely incompatible with older DVD drives and players.
